Part 2 in the RV winterization series. If you missed last week, take a look at part 1 . Winterizing your RV’s water system is a crucial step in this preparation, ensuring that your home on wheels is ready to withstand freezing temperatures without any damage. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you through the process. (Always refer to your owner’s manual).
Step 1: Drain the Tanks
Begin by draining all the tanks in your RV. This includes the freshwater tank, as well as the black and gray water tanks.
Step 2: Bypass the Water Heater (Unless you have a Tankless Water Heater).
Next, you’ll want to bypass the water heater to prevent antifreeze from entering it. This is typically done by turning a valve that redirects the flow of water away from the heater.
Tankless Water Heater Method:
Step 3: Drain the Water Heater
After bypassing (unless you have a tankless water heater), drain the water heater completely. If your water heater has an anode rod, now is a good time to check its condition and replace it if necessary.
Step 4: Blow Out the Lines
Using a compressed air fitting, blow out any excess water from the plumbing lines. Connect the air hose to each faucet, the toilet, shower, and any outdoor showers, opening them one at a time until only air blows out.
Step 5: Add Antifreeze
Once the lines are clear, it’s time to add antifreeze. Connect a hose to the winterize port and siphon non-toxic RV antifreeze into the system. Turn on all faucets, both hot and cold, until you see the antifreeze coming out. Don’t forget to pour antifreeze down the drains and toilet to protect the P-traps and seals.
Step 6: Final Checks
Reinstall any plugs you’ve removed, close all valves, and wipe down any spills of antifreeze, especially in plastic sinks to prevent staining.
By following these steps, you can rest assured that your RV’s water system is protected against the harsh winter conditions.
Remember, taking the time to properly winterize your RV will save you from costly repairs and ensure that your vehicle is ready for adventure as soon as the weather warms up. Safe travels and happy RVing!
